Providence, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team posted a commanding 5-1 victory against Rivier in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Johnson & Wales got on the board first when senior Samantha Reynolds (Plymouth, Mass.) notched an unassisted goal just 9:18 into the contest. Rivier had a chance to tie the game in the 15th minute when JWU was whistled for a foul in the box. Sophomore Lauren Tampossi (Hollis, N.H.) took the ensuing penalty kick, but it was stopped by JWU sophomore keeper Kara Collins (North Arlington, N.J.). The Wildcats would add to their lead later in the half when freshman Maggie Castle (Andover, N.J.) lofted in a shot from 35 yards out at the 42:47 mark for the 2-0 advantage. JWU took the two goal lead into halftime after out shooting the Raiders by a 12-5 margin.
The Wildcats again controlled the action early in the second half when they extended their lead to 3-0 at the 50:55 mark when senior Katlyn Gerrish (North Stonington, Conn.) bent in a corner kick into the net. JWU would be successful on the corner kick again when freshman Kaitlyn Whalen (Whittier, Calif.) headed in a kick from Gerrish in the 65th minute for the 4-0 advantage. JWU's final tally of the game came at the 67:03 mark when Gerrish's second goal of the game made the score 5-0. Rivier was able to avoid the shutout as senior Megan Hickey (Hempstead, N.H.) put in a free kick from 35 yards out with just under four minutes remaining to make the score 5-1. JWU would then cruise to the victory.
Collins had six saves in the win for the Wildcats while sophomore Christine Surber (Langdon, N.H.) had six stops for the Raiders in the setback.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 10-4-2 on the season and 8-1-2 in the GNAC while Rivier falls to 6-8-1 overall and 4-6 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, October 19th when they host Lasell for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at 3:30 p.m.
