KEENE, N.H. — The Rivier women's ice hockey team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to non-conference opponent, Keene St., Saturday evening at Keene ICE.
With the result, the Raiders dropped to 2-4-0 (2-0-0 MASCAC) while the Owls improved to 3-2-0.
After a scoreless first period, Keene St. capitalized on a 3-on-1 break in neutral ice, scoring off a rebounded shot to take a 1-0 lead with 3:36 remaining in the period. Ava Iantosca netted the goal, assisted by Molly Price and Brianna Finke.
Rivier kept up the pressure, outshooting Keene State 7-5 in the third period, and with just 32 seconds left in regulation and on a 6-4 women advantage due to a power play and an empty net, sophomore Rebecca McKelvey scored from the right circle, slipping the puck past the screened Keene State goalie to tie the game at 1-1 and send the game into overtime. Junior Jillian Hallee and Senior Briana Paxson picked up assists from the blue line.
Rivier successfully killed off a power play early in the overtime period, but Keene St. found the game-winning goal soon after as Brianna Finke located the loose puck and rifled her shot into the back of the net, securing a 2-1 victory for the Owls.
Senior goalie Rachel Symmes recorded 30 saves in the contest, boasting a 94% save percentage.
Rivier will have their third date with the Keene State on Friday, Nov. 22 as they travel once again to Keene ICE for a 7:45 p.m. puck drop.
