Women’s Volleyball Falls to Lasell, Defeats Albertus Magnus in GNAC Tri-Match

NEWTON, Mass. - The Rivier women's volleyball team fell to Lasell in straight sets in game one and swept Albertus Magnus in game two of Saturday afternoon's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match at the Lasell Athletic Center. 
 
With the results, the Raiders moved to 13-11 (7-2 GNAC), while the Lasers improved to 14-3 (5-1 GNAC), and the Falcons fell to 11-10 (2-4 GNAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Lasell held a slight lead to start the match, but Rivier kept it close, tying the score three times
  • With both teams deadlocked at 9-9, the Lasers went on a 7–2 run to propel themselves to a 16-11 lead 
  • Following a Raiders timeout, Lasell capped off the set on a 6-2 run to take a 1-0 match lead
  • The Lasers picked up where they left off, beginning the second frame with a 5-1 lead
  • The Raiders found momentum behind kills from sophomores Lydia Brakefield and Lily Seibel, along with an ace from senior Callie Nanos, to stay within one point at 9–8
  • Lasell rebounded midway through the set with a steady offensive performance and held onto its lead to take the set 25-19
  • Rivier recorded its first lead of the match to open the third stanza
  • The Lasers countered with four kills to take the lead just shy of the halfway point 
  • The Raiders fought their way back, capitalizing on a pair of errors to bring the score within three, and forcing Lasell into a timeout 
  • Following the timeout, the Lasers regained their offensive momentum and sealed the match, 25–18
BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
  • Senior Ali Rivera led Rivier with six kills, adding four digs and three block assists
  • Junior Sam Driend added four kills and eight digs, while Nanos finished with three kills, five block assists, and an ace.
  • Seibel added a double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs 
  • Defensively, senior Kaitlyn Miller logged a team-high 12 digs

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rivier found themselves down three early to begin the match, but responded with a 6-0 run to take a three-point lead 
  • Albertus Magnus battled back to level the match 12-12; however, three straight points, including a kill from Lydia Brakefield, gave the Raiders a four-score advantage 
  • Sam Driend's kill on a feed from Callie Nanos sealed the set, 25-17
  • Ali Rivera and Nanos combined for four kills to give Rivier a 10-7 lead to start the second set
  • Coming out of a timeout, the Falcons went on a 10-3 run to take their first lead of the set 
  • Junior Lacey Turner answered with a nine-point service run, sending Rivier to set point, followed by Nanos to take the set with her fourth kill of the frame 
  • Albertus Magnus controlled the pace of play for the majority of the third set, until a trifecta of kills from Nanos and Rivera gave the Raiders a 20-18 lead late in the set 
  • A kill by sophomore Savannah Dunne sent the game to match point, and Rivier sealed the contest a point later, 25-23  
BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
  • Nanos paced the offense with nine kills and four total blocks, followed by Rivera with eight kills and a .304 hitting percentage 
  • Lily Seibel contributed 24 assists to her total on the day 
  • Kaitlyn Miller added a game-high 18 digs defensively

The Raiders return to the court on Wednesday, Oct. 22, as they travel to Roger Williams for a non-conference match. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Campus Rec Center Gymnasium.
