WINTHROP, Mass. – Junior forward Brianna Spinelli, junior defender Sophia Quinlan, and first-year midfielder Mary Kelley of the Rivier field hockey team were named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player, Defender, and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Monday.
Spinelli tallied 10 points (4-2-10) in the 2-0 (1-0 GNAC) week for the Raiders. The Lynn, Mass. native began the week with a goal and an assist to help Rivier push past Framingham St., 3-1. Spinelli added three more goals and an assist in the 10-0 win over GNAC opponents Elms.
With her performance in Saturday's win, Spinelli is now tied for the program record for most points scored in a game (7), points earned in a season (29), and holds the record for most goals scored in a season with 13.
Quinlan earned her second GNAC Defensive Player of the Week award of the season for being a key contributor on defense, allowing just one goal and a single penalty corner over the two-game span. In addition to her defensive efforts, the Salem, N.H. native recorded her first career goal on her first collegiate shot against Elms.
Kelley recorded seven points on three goals and an assist this week. The Cumberland, R.I. native scored the game-winning goal in Thursday's non-conference bout with Framingham St. Kelley continued to have success in Saturday's match with Elms, contributing two goals and an assist in the record-breaking victory for Rivier.
Spinelli, Quinlan, Kelley, and the rest of the Raiders return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 28, for their regular-season finale against Mount Holyoke at Joanne Merrill Field. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
