BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Rivier men's basketball team took down non-conference opponents the University of New England (UNE) 82-70 for the first time since the 2003-04 season Tuesday evening at Coach Beaudry's Court.
With the win, the Raiders improved to 3-2, while the Nor'easters fell to 1-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Steph Barnes got Rivier on the board first, knocking down a three on the opening possession.
- Both teams traded scores following the early bucket, until a three from UNE briefly put the Nor'easters ahead, 5-3.
- At the midway point of the first half, Barnes finished a layup through contact to give the Raiders a 20-15 lead.
- Sophomore Matt Youngquist drilled a three from off a feed from senior Robenson Baguidy to increase Rivier's lead to 10.
- With 2:52 to go in the first half, senior Izaiah Shaw-Glen hit a jumper, giving the Raiders their largest lead of the contest.
- A 6-0 UNE run in the final minute trimmed the Raiders' lead to 35-28 heading into halftime.
- UNE scored a quick bucket coming out of the break to make it 35-30.
- The Raiders countered with a 15-8 run to push the lead to 50-38
- The Nor'easters battled back to level the game at 40-40 after completing a 10-0 run.
- Rivier bounced back offensively, extending its lead to as much as 12 points midway through the second half.
- UNE chipped away at the Raiders' lead in the final three minutes, but its comeback bid was unsuccessful in the end with Rivier taking the contest, 82-70.
