NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Rivier women's lacrosse team dominate in its midweek Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup up, beating Mitchell 21-2 Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
With the win, the Raiders improved to 3-5 (2-3 GNAC), while the Mariners fell to 0-4 (0-2 GNAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rivier jumped out to a fast start, netting three goals in a 1:35 span to open the contest. Junior Shaelyn Burke opened the scoring at the 13:38 mark off a feed from classmate Sofia Cebrero. Cebrero followed with a goal of her own moments later before recording her second tally just 39 seconds after that to give the Raiders a 3–0 advantage. Mitchell answered at 10:31 to cut the deficit to two, but Rivier closed the quarter with authority, scoring four goals over the final seven minutes. First-years Kaycie Hudon and Chloe Waldron found the back of the net 1:56 apart to extend the lead to 5–1. Hudon added her second of the frame before senior Ashley Talbot capped the quarter with her first goal of the season, sending the Raiders into the second quarter up 7–1.
- The Raiders continued to control play in the second quarter. First-year Alissa Eddy opened the scoring with a women-up goal at 12:50. Talbot added her second goal of the afternoon before the Mariners recorded their second tally of the game. Rivier responded with a late surge as Waldron and Cebrero scored over the final 3:09, pushing the Raiders' lead to 11–2 heading into halftime.
- Sophomore Ashlynn Ledoux set the tone early in the third quarter, scoring on a women-down possession to give Rivier a 10-goal cushion. Eddy later assisted sophomore Brooke Carter on her first goal of the day before Ledoux added her second of the afternoon. First-years Olivia Wheeler and Emma Finch followed with goals of their own, and Burke closed out the quarter with her second tally to make it 17–2.
- Rivier added four more goals in the final quarter to seal the victory. Finch scored her second of the game before first-year Hayleigh Young notched her first collegiate goal to extend the lead to 19–2. Waldron added another tally, and Eddy capped the scoring to secure the Raiders' 21–2 win.
BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
- Cebrero led the team with six points on three goals and three assists. Eddy followed close behind with five points via two goals and three assists.
- First-year goalkeeper Arrianna Imrbiano recorded a team-high four ground balls while stopping six shots.
- Nine different Raiders caused a turnover in the contest.
- Young posted a team-high four draw controls.
