Women’s Lacrosse Tops VTSU-Castleton, 14-5

NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier women's lacrosse team bested non-conference opponent VTSU-Castleton, 14-5, Thursday evening at Joanne Merrill Field.

With the win, the Raiders improved to 4-5, while the Spartans fell to 1-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rivier held Castleton scoreless for the opening 12:57 of the first quarter. Sophomore Ashlynn Ledoux and junior Sofia Cebrero connected for the game's first goal just 30 seconds into the opening frame. Ledoux added her first of the game at 10:23 off a feed from first-year Olivia Wheeler before completing the hat trick with an assist from sophomore Keegan McGaheran. First-year Hayleigh Young later found McGaheran to push the Raiders' lead to 4-0, and McGaheran followed with an unassisted tally at 3:46. Castleton finally found the back of the net late in the quarter to get on the board.
  • Wheeler opened the second quarter with an unassisted goal before Renny Cota converted a free-position attempt to cut Castleton's deficit to 6-2. Sophomore Brooke Carter restored Rivier's five-goal advantage after netting a women-down goal at 8:52 of the second quarter. The Spartans scored with three seconds remaining in the half, trimming the Raiders' lead heading into halftime.
  • After nearly eight minutes of scoreless action to begin the third quarter, Rivier found the back of the net on consecutive possessions with first-year Chloe Waldron finding twine a woman-down at 7:33 and Ledoux following close behind with a women-up goal at 6:49. Neither side recorded a goal down the stretch, leaving the Raiders ahead 9-3 with 15 minutes remaining.
  • Ledoux completed her hattrick off a feed from junior Shaelyn Burke to open the fourth quarter. Waldron registered her second goal just 55 seconds later, giving Rivier a 11-3 edge. Wheeler increased the Raiders' lead to nine following an unassisted goal 12:34. Castleton added their fourth of the evening at 8:16 however, first-year Kaycie Hudon scored on an assist from Cebrero to regain a nine-goal advantage. Each squad recorded a goal each down the stretch, with Waldron completing her hattrick to seal the 14-5 victory.

  • First-year goalkeeper Arrianna Imbriano stopped six shots in the contest.
  • Ledoux paced the offense with five points (4-1-5).
  • Wheeler and McGaheran followed close behind with four points (2-2-4).
  • Burke recorded a team-high three ground balls and caused three turnovers.
  • Young dominated the draw, registering seven draw controls.

The Raiders return to action Saturday, March 28 for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup with Elms. The opening draw is set for 5:00 p.m. at Joanne Merrill Field.
