NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier field hockey team fell to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Colby-Sawyer, 5-4, in overtime after coming back from a 3-0 deficit, Wednesday afternoon at Joanne Merrill Field.
With the result, the Raiders fell to 3-5 (0-2 GNAC), while the Chargers improved to 6-1 (1-0 GNAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Colby-Sawyer controlled the pace of play in the first quarter, outshooting Rivier 2-0. The first shot was registered 1:43 into contest but was turned away by first-year goalkeeper Tatum Flanagan. The Charger logged their second of the frame with 3:01 to remaining however, it was sent wide.
- Colby-Sawyer continued to control the pace of play to being the second quarter. Jillian Fredette recorded the unassisted goal to take a 1-0 lead. The Charger doubled their advantage as Abey Olden found Brooke Farquhar with just under five minutes remaining in the first half.
- Colby-Sawyer recorded its third tally of the afternoon before first-year Emily Barbosa found twine off a pass from sophomore Camdyn Despres to cut the deficit to two for the Raiders. The Chargers regained their three-goal edge with 4:37 to play in the third quarter.
- Rivier found its spark in the fourth quarter, recording two goals over 1:53 span. Barbosa registered her second of the contest before first-year Lauren Bailey connected with senior Brianna Spinelli to make it a one goal game with 10:39 to play. With no time remaining on the clock, the Raiders were awarded a penalty corner. Bailey and Barbosa connected once more, converting on the penalty corner and forcing overtime with Barbosa's third of the contest.
- Bailey recorded the opening shot of the overtime period but was denied. Colby-Sawer came down the field and netted the game-winning goal just over 40 seconds later.
